Sustainable Development at Columbia

The Sustainable Development PhD Program at Columbia University was started in 2004. It is officially in the School of International and Public Affairs but is also under the umbrella of the Earth Institute and all students are registered in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  There are approximately five students per cohort and both of us just finished our fifth year.  The intellectual core of the program is a hybrid of economics, natural sciences and public policy.  A central objective of the program is to produce research that addresses pressing social problems.
